CFP Drive insomnia is a Shuttle utility that continuously pings a drive, thereby maintaining a connection between the drive and the parent computer where the Windows App is installed. This can resolve some errors such as:
- Network path was not found
- The specified network name is no longer available
Causes of Drive Connectivity and Performance Issues
If a drive is visible in the server, but is either not visible in CFP or displays an error on enumeration of the data, here are some things to look at:
- You must be logged in to the server as the exact same user that the Win app was installed as. CFP will not see any drives that are not available as that logged in user. Note that Win app as a service does not detect mapped drives, but any mapped drives found during initial installation of the Win app will be converted to their UNC equivalents when the Win app is switched to service mode. Likewise, if the Win app is running as an app rather than a service, you will only see mapped drives and not UNC path shares.
- Make sure the drive is persistent.
- CFP supports CIFS drives and some, but not all, NFS drives.
- To assess connectivity, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Tervela\Cloud FastPath\utils and run show_attached_drives.bat. That will show diagnostics on the state(s) of your drive connections(s).
- Drives should be physically close to the server on which the Win app is installed. A drive that is hundreds of miles away will not perform well because the Windows SMB protocol is not very tolerant of network latency. Users may experience significant degradation in “scan time” when going from 1 ms latency to even just 10 ms latency. 1ms is on the order of 15 times higher files per second than 10 ms due to serialization delay and other factors.
- You can view the POP network diagram for any simulation or transfer job by going to the POP network diagram chart, which is available as a chart selection in the Statistics tab. This will geolocate the drive and POP. While the “acceptable” range for drive-POP distance depends on many factors, this can provide valuable information that can be integrated with knowledge of other factors.
- Hard connections via a network generally yield best performance. USB and Wifi connections are common bottlenecks. Misconfigured VPN connections can also result in failed or very slow connections.
- To assess latency, run a tracert for the drive’s IP address from the Windows app:
Anything less than 10ms is within acceptable limits.
Running CFP Drive Insomnia
CFP Drive Insomnia is the batch file cfp_drive_insomnia.bat, available in this directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Tervela\Cloud FastPath\utils.
To run the batch file, press <Win><R> to bring up the Run pop-up, then enter cmd.exe.

where ‘x:’ is for the mapped drive letter X:. You should see the following:

Keep the command window open to enable the batch file to keep running until your migration has completed.
Caffeine (Mac-based Jobs)
Caffeine is another useful utility that prevents Macintosh computers from going to sleep. It can be useful for migrations where the Windows app is installed in a virtual machine on the Mac computer. Caffeine is available at lightheadsw.com/caffeine.
